A hotel within a hotel, the Royal Level is an exclusive all-inclusive in Gran Canaria’s popular Playa del Ingles, with a range of suites to suit all tastes. 2. Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel, Amadores
Best for sea views and serenity
Perched on the clifftop between vibrant Puerto Rico and laid-back Amadores beaches, the Gloria Palace has become something of a landmark hotel since it opened several years ago. Those looking to get away from it all will love the infinity pool that seems to stretch far into the Atlantic, while the spa and thalasso centre are set up for restorative comfort, with an extensive hydrotherapy pool (with no fewer than 29 hydromassage stations) and a range of treatments from mud baths to acupuncture.

Best for adults
Smack-bang in the middle of Playa del Ingles in the south of the island, the Gran Canaria Princess is a great retreat for adults amid the frenetic excitement of the resort. There’s a spa with whirlpools, sauna and treatments, and plenty of grown-up entertainment and activities, such as water polo and an aqua gym, tai chi and a multi-sports court to play basketball, volleyball and mini football. The rolling sand dunes of Maspalomas are a mere ten-minute walk away, as well as the Yumbo Shopping Centre — the focal point of the annual Pride celebrations.

4. Hotel Riu Gran Canaria, Meloneras
Best for food
Set in stylish, upmarket Meloneras, the Riu Gran Canaria provides a modern take on the all-inclusive with many on-site restaurants to choose from including Kaori, an Asian-inspired eatery, and Atlantico, which serves classic Canarian cusine, as well as two buffet-style spots with live cooking stations. 5. Suites and Villas by Dunas, Maspalomas
Best for getting on your bike
This low-rise hotel has all the advantages of an all-inclusive with the added bonus of private bungalows. The hotel is laid out like a small village, with accommodation divided into small Canarian-style houses with classic pine details. There are separate cycling suites that give you access to the onsite Cycling Center with racks and video surveillance 24 hours a day, mechanical kit and five personalised cycling routes to download. Suitably cycled out, soak up the sun around the pool or book in for a massage or beauty treatment at the bijou wellness centre. 6. Seaside Palm Beach, Maspalomas
Best for design
Everything about this dune-side hotel is design-led. Built in the 1970s, the Palm Beach’s interiors have been modernised without losing the uniquely retro feel — it was one of the first hotels to be constructed when the area was being developed as a tourist centre. What really sets this place apart is that it overlooks the Maspalomas dunes and offers almost direct access to the miles-long sandy beach. Anyone who’s been to Playa del Ingles will recognise the cylindrical towers of the Waikiki. Best for waterpark fun and sun
Taurito is a small resort between Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogan and scores points for families thanks to the neighbouring waterpark. Best for chilled-out workations
As the first adult-only hotel in Gran Canaria, the family-owned Neptuno has plenty of experience providing grown-up amenities and facilities. Rooms are simple, kitted out with striking Spanish tiles, and have been fully renovated in recent years. 13. Marina Elite, Mogan
Best for great value
You’d be forgiven for thinking that you are floating on the water at Marina Elite: this secluded four-star hotel is on Balito beach, a small cove near Puerto Mogan. It has a mix of apartments with small kitchenettes, and several suites depending on your needs. The interiors are bang up-to-date and there’s a delightful rooftop pool and clever sun terrace housed on a bridge that crosses the road into the resort. While Balito beach is a quite pebbly, the white sands of Anfi del Mar are just a ten-minute stroll away.
