A hunter from New York is lucky to be alive after he fell into frigid waters when his kayak capsized. Fortunately, a heroic effort by Suffolk County first responders saved his life. When he went to retrieve it from the water, he says a strong wind gust knocked him in — leaving him stuck in frigid waters. “For a moment, I thought I was going to die,” said Shakalis. “I just held on for dear life.”His cousin and friend who were on shore called police who responded with a helicopter.”It was a little scary seeing the condition that he was in,” said Officer Jonathan Jensen with the Suffolk County Police Department.After 40 minutes in the water, the 34-year-old was brought more than a quarter of a mile back to shore and was flown to Stony Brook Hospital.”I definitely consider myself lucky to be alive,” Shakalis said. He also says he is “forever grateful” for the first responders who saved his life.
